Abstract
The Balkans: Linguistic Dimensions of the Ethnic Chaos
Confession is the most important determinant of ethnic identity in the Balkans. Novadays, however, ethnic boundaries are marked and nations are produced in terms of languages. Grammar books written in the 19th century awakened nationalism in the region. Though their linguistic roots are the same, dismemberment of Yugoslavia led to appearance of some languages like Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, and of peoples speaking in them. Ethnic definitions based on language serves only to carry ethnic chaos to the utmost point.<
