Abstract
The Travel Book of Evliyâ Çelebi in the Context of Languages, Dialects and Local Dialects
The most basic tool in diachronic language studies is texts with historical language data. Historical texts can both offer some clues about the internal structure of the language they belong to, as well as provide information about historical events, especially social and cultural issues of the period. Considering these two aspects, Evliyâ Çelebi's Seyahatname has a very important position for the Turkish language.
Evliyâ Çelebi's Seyahatname is one of the best texts reflecting the characteristics of 17th century Turkish, and it also contains information from the spoken language, dialects, and languages other than Turkish due to the language sensitivity of its author. Evliyâ Çelebi presented dialect, and language data, sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly, to present a complete description of his period. It is necessary to examine these data for the Turkish of the relevant century, Turkish dialects, local dialects, and languages other than Turkish. It is also possible to evaluate these data in Seyahatnâme in terms of phonetics, morphology, syntactic, lexical, and semantic aspects.
In this study, the data on Turkish dialects, local dialects, and languages other than Turkish in Seyahatnâme have been looked at holistically and it has been evaluated in which contexts these data can be evaluated.
