Abstract
Semıotıc Analysıs of Fıgures in Hıstorıcal Mosques as a Space of Socıal Memory: The Case of Muratlı Mosque
People have always lived on a space, changed and transformed the space and produced a new space. In this sense, space, beyond being a geographical term, appears as a place where social events are shaped. The space production in question is not independent of the common history, common culture and common memory of the society. In this sense, the existence of a space and the figures in this space are important for the continuation and permanence of the common memory. The space, which appears as a memory space, not only provides social indicators, but also ensures the permanence of the data coded into the social memory through these indicators. In this sense, the subject of the study is the semiotic analysis of the figures engraved on the pulpit of the Muratlı village mosque in the Borcka district of Artvin. This study aims to understand the meanings of the mentioned figures in terms of semiotics. For this purpose, the method of the study is semiotic analysis method. As a result of the findings, it has been seen that the historical figures in the mosque, which is a memory place, are the indicators of themes such as state authority, army, political power, peace, love, maritime, navy, trade, victory, independence, urbanism, Islamic tradition, conquest, and enlightenment. In this context, by emphasizing the local history of both the Ottoman Empire and Artvin, the figures in question provide indications of a common past, memory and identity in the historical process.
