Abstract
Owl in the Novels of Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar
Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, one of the productive writers of Turkish literature, is a name that brought daily life to his works. It is possible to find sections of social life, local speeches, the natural atmosphere of the neighborhoods and the expressive richness of traditional performance arts in his works. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar who combines his stories with humor, directs his criticism to people who have been captured by traditional beliefs and dogmas. In his works, he explains that every incident that keeps people captive and frightens them by using their beliefs can be easily resolved when a positivist understanding based on reason and science is adopted. In Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar’s novels, references to the owl that is believed to bring death and bad luck in folk belief exist as well. In this study, author’s all novels so forty novels were surveyed and eighteen novels containing references to the owl were determined. After these determinations, the novels in question were examined, the chapters with references were quoted, and it was evaluated how author interpreted this belief. Based on the findings, it has been seen that the owl is associated with death and bad luck in the references of the novels, the negative characteristics attributed to the owl are listed. In his novel titled Deli Filozof, it has been seen that the owl was used as a narrator to which the word was left. Consequently, it has been determined that there are traces of folk belief in all Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar’s references to the owl.
