Abstract


A Areal Linguistic Example in Relationship of Turkish and Persian Languages: The Pronoun Ben / Men
In New Persian language the form of the first person pronoun is men. In some Turkic dialects the first person pronoun is used as men too. As known Turkish and Persian are not from common language family. So how to explain the first person pronoun which is common in both languages? In this case, there are some possibilities. The first possibility is the result of an borrowing. The second possibility is a coincidence. This word may have been borrowed from Turkish to Persian or may have been borrowed from Persian to Turkish. But this article emphasize a third possibility about this issue. This possibility is areal linguistic. In this investigation is discussed the first person pronoun men (I) with all aspects that is used in Turkish and Persian. Also the first single person pronoun in old, middle and new Iranian languages is compared with the first single person pronoun in New Persian. Finally the relationship between the first single pronoun (men) in New Persian and the first single person (ben) in Turkish tried to explain.
