Abstract

Trebizond in English Trade Reports (1908-1913)
Trabzon has kept its identity as a port and trade city throughout history. It strengthened its importance with the monopoly of the Ottoman Empire in the Blacksea coming to an end and thus became a beaten track for many European countries. One of these countries is England and the English gave importance to the area starting from the beginning of the XIX. Century and tried to make use of the Blacksea basin for the sake of its own commercial activities through the consulates which it opened. The consulates served and prepared reports not only in developing reciprocal relations but also in understanding and trying to give meaning to the area. A vast range of data ranging from commercial statistics to public works, industry and commerce were covered in these reports. In this study the latest six reports written after 1908 will be scrutinized and an effort to evaluate them will be made.
