Rural settlements from Ottoman Anatolia: The case of the district of Kıreli of Konya of 1835
This research article is mainly based on Ottoman data of 1835. These are manuscripts and were written in Ottoman Turkish. The Ottoman government needed cash in the 1820s due to wars with Russia and Iran. To achieve this, it taxed all peasants in Anatolia again. In this study, the situation of 22 Islamic villages in the district of Kıreli of Konya of Anatolia was examined. Agricultural lands and livestock were the main means of livelihood for the Muslim peasants. However, with the increase in the population, these resources were not enough for the peasants and the nomads (Yörük). Many men left their villages and went to the cities to earn money. The Ottoman administration found them there too and taxed their profits. This was a very heavy practice for them. Most villages were abandoned. The peasants had to be content with only rural resources. The vacant agricultural lands were immediately planted by the surrounding peasants.
