Özet
En genel tanımla “bir kahramanlık anlatması” olan destanlar, türü itibarıyla yaratıldığı toplumun gelenek ve göreneklerini, ideal ve beklentilerini, kutsiyet atfettikleri değerler ve tabularını içeriğinde barındırdığı karakterlerin ve kahramanların eylemleriyle birlikte en yoğun şekilde sunan anlatma esasına dayalı türlerin başında gelmektedir. Toplumun değer yargılarıyla donatılmış olan destanlar, bu yönüyle taraflı anlatmalardır denilebilir. Destan kahramanının eylemleri, doğduğu ve ait olduğu toplumun değer yargıları açısından her zaman “doğru/olumlu/gerekli”dir. Bu eylemlerin karşısında konumlanan her karakter veya eylem de yanlış/olumsuz ve gereksizdir. Olay örgüsünde meydana gelen bu çatışmayla birlikte toplumun değer yargıları ve idealleri destanda işlenmektedir. Destanlar, kahramanların ya da kahramanca eylemin -belirli olaylar ya da destanlarda tipik olarak anlatılan bireylerin özel dünyalarından ziyade- ortaya çıktığı toplumun kültür ve düşünce dünyasını temsil eder. Bu anlamda kahramanlık destanları -bazen tarihsel bir gerçekliğe de dayanarak- halkların dünyayı algılayış biçimleri, çevreleri ile kurdukları ilişki ve bir topluluk olarak kendilerine belirledikleri hedefleri tespit edebileceğimiz önemli kültür hazinelerindendir. Destanları bu yönüyle incelediğimizde, ulusal mirasın bir parçasını oluşturduğunu söyleyebiliriz.

Abstract
In the most general definition, epics are "a heroic narrative". Epics are one of the genres based on the principle of narration, which present the traditions and customs, ideals and expectations of the society in which they are created, the values and taboos that they attribute sacredness to, together with the actions of the characters and heroes they contain in the most intense way. Epics, which are equipped with the value judgments of the society, can be said to be biased narratives in this respect. The actions of the epic hero are always "right/positive/necessary" in terms of the value judgments of the society in which the epic is created. Every character or action opposite to these actions is wrong/negative and unnecessary. With this conflict occurring in the plot, the value judgments and ideals of the society are processed in the epic. Epics represent the world of culture and thought of the society in which the heroes or heroic deeds - rather than specific events or the private worlds of individuals typically described in epics - emerge. In this sense, heroic epics - sometimes based on a historical reality - are important cultural treasures through which we can determine the way peoples perceive the world, the relationship they establish with their environment and the goals they set for themselves as a community. When we analyze epics in this respect, we can say that they form a part of the national heritage.
