Abstract
A National Day Emerging from the Determination of a Nation: Commemoration of Atatürk and 19 May Youth and Sports Day and Celebrations During the Atatürk Period
19 May Youth And Sports Day had been celebrated on a local level for quite a while before it was started to be celebrated as a formal National Day. The Nation played an essential role in bringing the Day on a national level. Although it had not been accepted as a formal National Day initially, it was first celebrated on a national level in 1935. Republican People's Party was influential in these celebrations from 1936 up to 1938. It was accepted as a formal National Day nearly five months before Atatürk?s death. Atatürk had attended only 1938 ceremonies.<
