Abstract
An Evaluation of Monumental Buildings Reused as a Museum on the Example of the Kızlar Monastery in Trabzon
Monumental buildings are important cultural assets that contain a lot of information about the culture, architecture, way of life of the region. As a result of changes in the user profile over time, these buildings can be restored by maintaining them with the same function, as well as they can be completely destroyed without maintenance or re-using so that they can keep up with their era. The aim of the study is to evaluate the museum function, which is a frequently preferred type of use in the re-using of historical buildings, and to determine the positive and negative approaches in the transformation of Trabzon Kizlar Monastery, which was opened in 2021. In this regard, the method of the study consists of two stages. At the first stage, as a result of the data collection method, the information to be used in the study was obtained by investigating the existing literature and examining the archive records, and then the current situation was analyzing by conducting on-site examinations in the study area. In the second stage, re-using of the building as a museum was evaluated in terms of spatial/functional, environmental, sociocultural and economic aspects. In the findings of the study, positive and negative approaches related to the transformation process of the monastery were included. In the study, it was concluded that the selection of a new function related to the environment and compatible with monumental buildings will contribute to the realization of a conservation approach with continuity and cultural tourism of the region.
