Abstract
A Comparative Essay: The Epic of Bathal Ghazi and Digenes Akrites
Although the epics do not reflect the historical facts exactly, because of their particular historical events must be considered as significant resources. Epics are literary works which contains important events and cultural elements for nations. The most important feature of these two epics, that their issues occured in Anatolia. Therefore, both are products of Anatolian culture.
Bathal Ghazi lived in the seventeeth and eighteenth centuries and martyrized in a battle made with Byzantines. Afterwards regarded a Turkish hero. The evidence of the Digenes epos shows that the historical background is the period of Byzantine-Arab peace in the tenth century. Byzantines reached Syria and the eastern borders of the empire had advanced to the Euphrates in this century.
