Abstract
Investigation of the Texts in Turkish Textbooks for 6th, 7th and 8th in Terms of Value Education
In the present study, the concepts of value given place in the texts in Turkish textbooks for 6th, 7th and 8th grades are investigated. The principal tool for teaching Turkish, texts are significant in terms of passing on the values that the national and universal cultures are based on, to students. In the study, document analysis from qualitative research methods is employed and data analysis is carried out through content analysis method. As a result of the analysis, 2 themes being national values and universal values and 22 subcodes concerning these themes are determined. Six codes concerning national values - patriotism, valuing the flag of the country, cultural heritage, love for Atatürk, respect to ancestors, the importance of religious/national festivals - have been specified while 16 codes concerning universal values - responsibility, diligence, tolerance, mercy, consistency, honesty, friendship, kindness, farsightedness, love for nature, being against to injustice, freedom, justice, solidarity, self-confidence and hospitality - have been indicated. According to the results of the study, the first 3 values specified and coded the most frequently in Turkish textbooks are respectively “Love for Atatürk (26)”, “Love for nature (21)” and “Patriotism (18)”. On the other hand, it has been found out that the least frequently used values are justice (3), self-confidence (3), freedom (4), consistency (3) and the importance of religious/national festivals (1).
